Pokhara University runs its bachelor programmes on a semester system with a 4.0 grade-point scale, and its engineering faculties — Computer, Software, Civil, Electrical and Electronics & Communication — are among the most popular in Nepal. What makes PU's grading distinctive is how fine-grained it is: the top grade is a plain “A” worth 4.0, and the scale steps down through A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+ and D before reaching a failing F. That means small differences in performance show up clearly in your SGPA.

Because PU labs, projects and theory papers all carry credit hours, your semester result is a credit-weighted average rather than a simple mean. How to calculate SGPA at Pokhara University (honour points)

PU's own examination rules define SGPA as the grade point average of a particular semester and CGPA as the grade point average of all semesters taken together. Both are credit-weighted, which is why you cannot simply average your grade points.

The working unit is the honour point (also written “honor point”): for each subject, multiply its credit hours by the grade point you earned.

Honour point = credit hours × grade point
SGPA = total honour points ÷ total credit hours

So a 3-credit subject graded A contributes 3 × 4.0 = 12.0 honour points, while a 1-credit workshop graded A contributes only 1 × 4.0 = 4.0. That weighting is the whole reason a bad grade in a heavy theory paper hurts far more than the same grade in a lab. The worked example above runs the full calculation on one PU semester.

How to calculate CGPA at Pokhara University

CGPA uses the same formula, widened to every semester you have finished: add up the honour points from all semesters and divide by all the credit hours attempted. Averaging your SGPAs together only gives the right answer when every semester carries identical credit hours, which at PU they usually do not.

Three CGPA thresholds are worth knowing, all taken from Pokhara University's published academic system for the undergraduate level:

• CGPA 2.0 — the minimum a bachelor's student must maintain. PU states that students who fail to maintain it may be dismissed from the programme. (Graduate level: 3.0.)
• CGPA 3.60 — the threshold to graduate with distinction. (Graduate level: 3.75.)
• CGPA 3.7 — the Dean's List threshold at undergraduate level. (Graduate level: 3.8.)

Converting a Pokhara University GPA to percentage

Pokhara University does not publish an official GPA-to-percentage formula — PU marks each subject out of 100 first (undergraduate finals are weighted 0.50 internal + 0.50 external) and then converts that mark to a letter grade, so the percentage is the input to the GPA rather than something derived back out of it.

The rule of thumb used across Nepal is percentage ≈ GPA × 25 on a 4.0 scale, so a 3.58 SGPA is roughly 89.5%. Treat that as an estimate for scholarship or job forms that demand a percentage, and use your transcript's actual marks when an exact figure matters.
