How to Calculate SGPA and CGPA in Nepal: A Step-by-Step Guide

These two numbers decide whether you graduate with distinction, qualify for scholarships, and clear the GPA cut-offs that many employers and foreign universities apply. What SGPA and CGPA actually mean
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) measures your performance in a single semester. It is the credit-weighted average of the grade points you earned in that semester's subjects.
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) measures your performance across every semester you have completed so far. It is not simply the average of your SGPAs — semesters with more credit hours count for more.
The two numbers you need for every subject
Before you can calculate anything, each subject gives you two values:
- Credit hours — how “heavy” the subject is. A 3-credit theory subject counts more than a 1-credit lab or project.
- Grade point — a number from 0 to 4 that your letter grade maps to. The exact mapping depends on your university (more on that below).
The SGPA formula
For one semester:
SGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours)
In words: multiply each subject's grade point by its credit hours, add all of those products together, then divide by the total number of credit hours in the semester.

Imagine a Pokhara University engineering student with five subjects in a semester:

Total points = 46.0 and total credit hours = 13, so:
SGPA = 46.0 ÷ 13 = 3.54
Notice how the 1-credit lab barely moves the average, while the 3-credit subjects dominate. That is the whole point of credit weighting — a brilliant grade in a tiny lab cannot rescue a weak grade in a heavy theory paper.
The CGPA formula
Once you have an SGPA (and total credits) for each semester, your cumulative GPA is:
CGPA = Σ (SGPA × Semester Credits) ÷ Σ (Semester Credits)
This is again a credit-weighted average — this time the weights are the credit totals of each semester.

If you had simply averaged the three SGPAs (3.54 + 3.20 + 3.70) ÷ 3 you would have got 3.48 — close, but wrong. The difference grows when your semesters have very different credit loads, which is exactly why you should never average SGPAs directly.
Why the grade-point table matters
The single biggest source of wrong GPA calculations in Nepal is using the wrong grade-point table. Each university maps letter grades to different numbers. For example, an “A” is worth 4.0 at Pokhara University, but at TU, KU and PBU the top grade is “A+” at 4.0 while a plain “A” is only 3.6.
